Book excerpt: The dependence of the absorption of longitudinal ultrasonic waves in single crystals of benzene on the frequency and on the orientation of the crystal was investigated experimentally. Results were compared with the predictions of the resonance absorption theory. The crystals were aligned to desired orientations by optical techniques. Absorption coefficients were computed from direct measurements of the attenuation of longitudinal wave propagation at 5, 10, and 15 megacycles. Absorption was found to be a function of crystal orientation, both in magnitude and frequency dependence. The frequency-squared dependence predicted from resonance absorption theory was observed for some, but not all orientations. Results indicate the presence of an additional absorption mechanism.
