Book excerpt: Athenagoras was a Christian apologist who lived in the second half of the second century of whom no more is known than that he was an Athenian philosopher and a convert to Christianity. Of his writings there have been preserved but two genuine pieces; "Apology" or "Embassy for the Christians" which was carefully written to plead justice for the Christians from the Emperors Marcus Aurelius Antoninus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus & "Treatise on the Resurrection" which was written later than the "Apology", and to which it may be considered as an appendix.
