Book excerpt: James Regan Sr. (1748-1820) and his family were the only Regans living in Rowan County, North Carolina from about 1791 until after 1822 (when Davidson County was formed). Descendants (many spelling the surname Ragan, and some spellings of Reagan, Riggan, Regun, Reegan, etc.) and relatives lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri and elsewhere. Some of these descendants and relatives were Quakers, and some of these endowed Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
