Book excerpt: Textile industries face increasing pressure to improve the quality of new products while at the same time reducing waste and product lead-time. There is limited research, experimental and statistical analysis to support textile industries growth, moreover a lot of waste in the plants. This situation has put a stronger focus on waste. To successfully address these issues in textile industries, this study will present innovative and methodical approach that integrates a sophisticated lean manufacturing tools to optimize the performance characteristics subject by searching the design space to efficiently determine the best design variables and exhibit extremely high levels of reliability, durability, agility, and efficiency without explicitly evaluating each possibility. Optimization system will apply different strategies: different algorithms, different control point locations and different tools, to enhance performance variables. Groundwork to the proposed approach is to develop regression model by using value stream mapping tool through applying design of experiments techniques for both states in order to determine the best design variables from among all possibilities without explicitly evaluating each possibility. At that point the experimental methods focus on developing simulation model using Arena to optimize lead-time/throughput and predict the amount of Work-In-Progress (WIP) in the proposed layout and theorized outputs for different lean configurations. Following a road map to implement this strategy to eliminate waste in these plants and enhance quality, productivity, reduce manufacturing costs and utilize just in time (JIT) philosophy. All these strategies are proposed to achieve the goal, to increase production. Upon completion of this research, a regression model is to be developed to optimize system throughput. The use of optimization techniques to identify the best optimal design, and allow the textile manufacturers to improve and implement better control methods and investigate how companies across a variety of industries have used lean manufacturing strategy to enhance quality, productivity and cost.
