Book excerpt: Xenopeltis unicolor, often known as the "Sunbeam Snake" or "Boie's Sunbeam Snake," is the species of snake most commonly referred to when the term "Sunbeam Snake" is used. Sunbeam Snakes are harmless and beautiful because of the iridescent shine of their scales, which reflect a kaleidoscope of colors in the sunlight. Sunbeam Snakes are endemic to Southeast Asia and are mostly found in nations like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and adjacent regions. Although some individuals have been recorded at 4 feet in length, these snakes are normally much shorter at 2 to 3 feet. These snakes like to spend most of their time underground, and they are notoriously secretive due to their fossorial (underground) lifestyle. They favor humid forests and regions with nearby water. Sunbeam Snakes use their powerful constriction to capture its prey, which are mostly small animals and reptiles. Sunbeam Snakes are occasionally maintained as exotic pets due to their eye-catching look; however, providing the proper humidity and temperature for them to grow can be difficult. It is vital to examine local laws and regulations regarding the capture or keeping of wildlife as pets before attempting to obtain one, as doing so may be regulated or prohibited in certain locations.
