Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additionally, microscopic experimental and phenomenological study is also performed to link the engineering properties and macroscopic variables to the phenomena occurring at the pore scale. Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) technique is used to reveal the evolution of the pore sizes. The large pores are found to be mainly responsible for the shrinking deformation. A microscopic model is developed to simulate the possible scenarios during the entire desaturated phase. A possible quantitative comparison with MIP results and macroscopic experiments is made with using the averaging method to upscale the variables obtained at the micro-scale. The main characteristics of shrinkage behavior observed in macroscopic experiments are generally reproduced.
