A steady state is established between two competitive reaction pathways for oxygen. They are the reaction of oxygen with adsorbed propane and the re-oxidation of the reduced catalyst. Once the gas phase oxygen had reacted completely, the propane reacted with lattice oxygen from the catalyst with high selectivity to form propylene.
