Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate how applying culturally responsive teaching practices into planning and instruction can impact student achievement. This study focused on the following questions: (1) What makes curriculum and instruction, culturally responsive and sustaining? (2) What changes need to be made to the current curriculum to increase cultural responsiveness to students? (3) Once changes have been made, what effect does it have on student achievement? This hypothetical study was designed for any TK-12 teacher to use in their classroom. The study was organized into two parts. The first was to modify the curriculum using a planning tool I developed based four elements of culturally responsive teaching. The second part analyzes student achievement and engagement data. Results from the literature show that this process could add to an ongoing practice of developing culturally responsive teaching practices.
