Book excerpt: The Thunder Bay area experienced large losses of outdoor overwintered container stock in the years leading up to and including 1987, prompting the examination of alternative overwintering techniques such as indoor frozen storage facilities. This report gives the results of a trial to compare the outplant survival and growth of cold stored stock to conventional outdoor storage for Ventblock and Paperpot stock in trial plots within an operational plant. The trial compared the second year outplant performance of four container stock types of black spruce, each of which was produced and planted in three consecutive years (1989, 1990, 1991).
