Book excerpt: The papers in this book were presented at a research workshop on "New Computing Environments : Parallel, Vector, and Systolic" which was held at Stanford University on November 7-9, 1984, under the sponsorship of the Army Research Office with the assistance and cooperation of the Department of Computer Science. The workshop's content was determined by the attempt to survey, as much as possible, work accomplished in real computing environments which involve a heavy degree of parallelism, and still to take account of some potential new developments in computer architectures and their prospective influence on algorithms and software.
