The majority of returns cover a period of anywhere from one to two years (or longer), with many marriages listed on each document. Once the return was received by the clerk, it was recorded in "Marriage Books", with the book and page number written on the back of each return which also included officiant's name, names of participants, and addresses. The collection does not contain many records of Catholic or Jewish marriages; additionally, many records relating to Ocean County, N.J. (until 1850 a part of Monmouth County) are missing.
