Book excerpt: Eight years of 100-mb geopotential height observations, taken over most of Asia and the western North Pacific Ocean, were searched to uncover predictors of the time of retreat of rainy seasons. Statistically significant predictors were found and two prediction equations were derived and tested on one year of independent data. Evidence shows that skillful predictions of the date of retreat of rainy seasons can be prepared several weeks in advance. More data are required to test the reliability of this evidence. (Author).
