Book excerpt: Parent involvement is considered a key factor for the successful development of literacy skills of English Language Learners (ELLs). One challenge that ELLs face is that their parents do not always know how to support them in becoming proficient readers. This is often because of their parents' language differences. Some parents of ELLs think that because of their language barrier they are not able to help their children academically. Therefore, this project supports and describes the importance of promoting parental involvement to support the children's learning process and explores the benefits of the usage of the first language (L1) when learning to read in a second one (L2). This project is designed as a workshop for Hispanic parents of ELLs. This paper includes the parent workshop which is intended to provide Hispanic parents of ELLs with reading comprehension strategies for them to do at home. One of the main goals of the workshop is to empower parents to help their children bt using their L1, emphasizing that knowing two languages is a gift they can give their child and informing them that despite language obstacles, they can help their children to succeed in school.
