Book excerpt: Case files include all of the documents generated during the process of a chancery court trial, and may be extensive, minimal or nonexistent for any given case. Chancery cases are cases of equity and may involve such issues as foreclosures, business dissolutions, and injunctions. Case files, regardless of their disposition, are filed in docket order for each court term. A case which continued over several court terms was assigned a different docket number for each term, but should be filed under the docket number assigned for the term in which the case ended. Note that pre-1840 chancery court case files are included with supreme court case files (see Series SUPR-CA-003), since chancery court was held by the supreme court during that period.
