Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Adjutant General of the State of West Virginia, for the Years 1889 and 1890 The West Virginia National Guard was organized under the provisions of chapter 24, Acts 1889, by General Orders No. 2, dated June 7, 1889, into one Brigade of two Regiments designated as the First and Second Regiments. To the first Regiment, there were assigned ten companies and to the Second eight - the Governors Guard unattached. As will be seen from Roster herewith published, each regiment now has ten companies, the Gov. Guard having been attached to the Second.
