We have no adequate history of English Ethics, the attempt has been made in this volume to coverapartofthegroundbytracingtherbeand de velopment of Utilitarianism in England. No one of the writers considered - not even Hume or Mill - is individ ually of such importance for English Ethics as Bishop Butler; but, taken as a whole, Utilitarianism may fairly be regarded as England's most characteristic, if not most important, contribution to the development of ethical theory. This being the case, its history certainly deserves careful and somewhat extended treatment. The author hopes that.
