Book excerpt: While China's need for Western technology and management expertise has creates many opportunities for foreign companies, profits are not easily realized due to many cultural and structural barriers. This paper attempts to throw some light into opportunities as well as barriers that confound foreign business and the path of overcoming these barriers. The first section of the paper provides a brief overview of the history of the economic policies of the PRC. This is followed by a summary of present business opportunities for outsiders and a discussion on some obstacles they face. Finally management implications are explored and aconcluding section summarizes the key attributes of successful firms in China. [Authors' abstract].
