Book excerpt: As measures of developed verbal and mathematical abilities that are important for success in college, SAT scores are useful in making decisions about individual students and assessing their academic preparation. Because of the increasing public interest in educational accountability, aggregate test data continue to be widely publicized and analyzed. Aggregate scores can be considered one indicator of educational quality when used in conjunction with a careful examination of other conditions that affect the educational experience. This document contains information on: the overall performance of public and private schools combined in regard to SAT scores; and specifically on the performance of the North Carolina School System in regard to SAT scores. This document contains 3 appendices: (1) North Carolina and the nation; (2) performance of the 117 public school systems, charter schools, North Carolina School of the Arts, and North Carolina School of Sciences and Mathematics; and (3) performance of the fifty states.
