Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Alabama Academy of Science, Vol. 19: December, 1947 The division of the coal into particles pass ing 250 microns increased the rapidity with which time of storage reduced swelling power. This change was to be expected because of the, greatest surface exposed to oxidation. Coal 9' showed the greatest reduction in swelling. The mmimum reduction of swelling power that occurred from fresh coal, for any case, was two units.
