The results of this sample have been statistically expanded to estimate the total population of owners of privately held forest land and the acreage they own. To fully under stand how estimates were made, the user of these data is advised to read the discussion of study methods and sampling errors in the Appendix. For the resurvey of the forest resources of West Virginia, data were developed for four geographic sampling units: (1) National Forest Land; (2) the Northeastern Unit; (3) the Southern Unit, and (4) the Northwestern Unit. Because the entire Nation al Forest Unit is in public ownership, it was ex cluded from this report (fig. I).
