Book excerpt: A low alloy, quench and tempered high strength steel was cold worked various amounts up to 70% reduction in area by hydrostatic extrusion. The compressive offset yield strength of the cold worked material was significantly lowered due to the Bauschinger effect. These data were compared to the tensile yield behavior of this material similarly cold worked and indicated that the Bauschinger effect also altered the tensile yield behavior. With successively higher post-extrusion heat-treatments the Bauschinger effect was found to become smaller and could eventually be eliminated. The strength differential between the compression and tensile yield strengths of the unworked material disappeared after cold hydrostatic extrusion and post-extrusion tempering at 1000F. (Author).
