The town was the Palmetto State's first with long-run electrical power, and it therefore earned the early nickname of "The Electric City." Smaller towns in the county, including Belton, Honea Path, Piedmont, Pelzer, Pendleton, and Williamston, developed around depots serving the Greenville and Columbia Railroad.
