Book excerpt: The emperor kept his daughter Shibumi protected behind the walls of a beautiful garden. She could hear the sounds of the city and children laughing and thought, ¿Life must be wonderful outside the wall.¿ She climbed a tree and saw over the wall that the children were all ragged and dirty, not beautiful and well-dressed as she had imagined. The city was ugly and dirty, not beautiful. She was so troubled by this that she had a huge kite made for her, on which she flew high above the city. She told her father that she would not come down until the city below her is as beautiful as the palace. When she and the kitemaker flew away in the sky, her father became grief-stricken. A young samurai went to find her and bring her back. Full-color illustrations. Ages 7-10.
