Book excerpt: Hydraulic fracturing is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas. In the Territory the most common form of unconventional gas is shale gas, which will therefore be the primary focus of the Inquiry. The major recommendation, consistent with other Australian and International reviews, is that the environmental risks associated with hydraulic fracturing can be managed effectively subject to the creation of a robust regulatory regime.
