Book excerpt: We discovered a highly enantioselective Mannich reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to N-Boc protected aryl and alkyl imines by using cinchona alkaloid derivatives bearing thiourea functionalities at C9 position. Products of the Mannich reaction are readily transformed into beta-amino acids or beta-amino ketones.
