Book excerpt: Globally, several world-leading organisations have put sustainable tourism on their agenda, such as the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) or the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Similar initiatives are mirrored in Europe and developed and implemented by EU institutions, such as the European Commission and the European Environment Agency, or by international organisations such as the Council of Europe through the European Institute of Cultural Routes (ETIS, 2016). The main purpose of this review was to identify approaches of sustainability indicators and cultural indicators on destinations. The introduction of eco-labelling systems and their application in the tourism industry dates to the early 1990s. Attention is drawn to the importance of eco-labelling in tourism for improving the ecological quality of products with the attendant possibility of creating a positive influence for maintaining competitive advantage (Kozak & Nield, 2004).
