Book excerpt: Operational Availability (Ao) is a measure of the "real" average availability over a period of time and includes all experienced sources of downtime, such as administrative downtime, logistic downtime, etc. The operational availability is the availability that the customer actually experiences. Ao is essentially the posteriori availability based on actual events that happened to the system. This often leads to the evaluation of Ao via analysis or simulation, measuring(predicting) the systems reliability and maintainability characteristics. In many cases, operational availability cannot be controlled by the manufacturer due to variation in location, resources and other factors that are the sole province of the end user of the product. Optimization is an important tool in making decisions and in analyzing physical systems. In mathematical terms, an optimization is the task of finding the best solution from among the set of all feasible solutions.. The Operational Availability optimization requires minimizing the sum of Preventive and Corrective Maintenance costs. and includes the cost of lost system operation; those quantities costs are generally known as economic analyses
