Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on the Taxation Revenue System of Illinois, 1910: Prepared for the Special Tax Commission of the State This report on the Taxation and Revenue System of Illinois has been based mainly on a study of the laws and the data in the published reports of the Auditor of Public Accounts, the State Board of Equalization and other State officials. In the statistical tables will be found somewhat comprehensive and systematic statements showing for a considerable period of time, the data published in the regular reports of the State officials for single years or biennial periods. Some information and suggestions have been received in letters, submitting complaints of the tax laws and proposing changes, which have been sent to the Special Tax Commission from State and local officials, and from various associations, corporations and individuals. But no opportunity has been offered to undertake an intensive examination of the methods and practices of township, county or state officers. In connection with some topics, a brief comparison has been made of methods of taxation in other states and countries; while the last two chapters contain a general discussion of state taxation officials and the taxation of corporations in the United States.
