Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Transit Department for the Year Ending December 31, 1933 The activities of the Department have been devoted almost entirely to the work of installing and equipping the tunnel with the apparatus necessary for its successful Operation. This included constructing fresh air and exhaust air ducts, connect ing fans and blowers provided to furnish sufficient air for proper ventilation, laying granite block in the tunnel and the East Boston incline, pumping equipment to take care of drainage water, glazed tile wall finish, lighting units, installation of cable and wire for operating fans, lights, signals, telephones, pumps, etc., approximately 675 miles of such wire being required From the present rate of progress it is anticipated that the tunnel will be ready for public use about the first of next July.
