Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racing Calendars, 1866, 1867 The inauguration of Saratoga as a racing centre in 1863, was followed by Jerome Park in 1866, and racing, which had fallen in popularity in the North some twenty years previously, began a career which has rendered it the National sport of the country. Prospect Park (now known as Gravesend) followed Jerome Park and was in turn followed by Mon mouth Park in New Jersey. Yet during this impor tant era no records of races were published in book form. In 1870 Col. Bruce took up the thread Porter had dropped ten years before and published a rec ord of races in connection with the trotting record of that year. Then Mr. Borling and Mr. Watson published annuals. In 1876 Mr. Crickmore pub lished his admirable Guide to the Turf, and later, the Messrs. Goodwin issued the Turf Guide. Still, the racing from 1860 to 187 O remained unte corded. The omission was a serious one, as the period was one of great historical interest. Aside from its marking the date when racing had finally entered upon its career as a great popular amuse ment, it was also marked by the appearance uponthe scene of some famous racehorses. Planet had closed his brilliant career just as Norfolk, Asteroid and Kentucky, that great triumvirate of Lexington's sons, had taken the field and carried all before them. Idlewild 's star had scarcely paled before Ruthless had won the first Belmont Stakes and be gun a career that placed her among the great mares of the generation. Mollie Jackson had deserted the post for the paddock and given us an improved edi tion of herself in. Fannie Ludlow, destined to foal the dam of Foxhall. Mr. John Hunter and Mr. Francis Morris, who had for several years stood almost alone as owners of racehorses in the North, had been joined by such gentlemen as Hon. August Belmont, D. D. Withers, W. Constable, L. W. Jerome, John F. Purdy, R. W. Cameron, M. H. Sanford, W. R. Travers, P. S. Forbes and others, who for the first time registered th'eir Racing Colors. Moreover, the period from 1860 to 1870 is impor tant in that during that decade were imported such horses as Leamington, Australian; Eclipse, ' Billet, Phaeton and Glenelg, as well as a large number of mares, several of which founded the most successful racing families of the present day. Many of these animals raced in this country after importation, and their racing career as Well as that of their early progeny is of great concern to the breeder and horseman in tracing their speed producing qualities.
