Book excerpt: This is a beautifully illustrated story written in an extended poem, exploring a year in the life of a little Navajo girl starting from autumn to summer. Her charming story deals with seasonal change, tribal life, family troubles, storytelling, clash with non-natives, hunger, sacrifice, etc. In addition, there are poems about sheep, goats, a trip to the trading post, shearing the sheep, washing the wool, and learning to weave. The book contains poems for every phase of the "Little Herder's" life. She earned this nickname the day she went out to help her mother herd sheep. Then, in Summer, she grew old enough to go to the summer pastures in the mountains with her family. She felt alone there, wishing she had someone to play with. But once she saw butterflies and squirrels and felt the earth under her bare feet, she scolded herself for feeling that way.
