Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the gender-related differences between the speech of men and women in a variety of languages spoken all over the world, to discuss gender variation in English and in some varieties of English and to identify gender-related stereotypes in Romanian. The Romanian analysis focuses on adolescents and reveals that there are certain sociocultural norms in their speech behaviour. The use of swearing and taboo language by Romanian adolescents is investigated and analysed.
